To mark the occasion of World Heart Day, Indus Health Plus conducted its flagship initiative ‘Back – A – Thon’ for the fourth time in the city. The eventBack- A-Thon “Push back heart diseases” was flagged off by Mr. Amol Naikawadi, JMD and Preventive Healthcare Specialist, Indus Health Plus.

The enthusiastic crowd started the Back-A-Thon from Chaturshringi Temple on Senapati Bapat Road at 7:30 am to Dhotre Chowk in Model Colony. The back walk was carried over a stretch of over one and a half kilometers. In one of the most compassionate examples of expressing support and solidarity towards creating awareness on heart diseases among the general public in Pune, over 200 people participated to support the cause. The activity was followed by a health talk on healthy habits for overall wellbeing and lifestyle modification and practice to maintain heart health by Dr. Abhijit Palshikar from Sahyadri hospital, Pune.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Amol Naikawadi said, “We have observed that cardiovascular diseases are in a rising trend across all age groups. The World Heart Day’s theme for this year is “My Heart, Your Heart”.And, through Back-A-Thon, we want to make this theme as our goal by sensitizing people towards living a healthy lifestyle for a healthy heart. Walking backward increases your heart rate as compared to walking forward at the same pace, which suggests you can get greater cardiovascular and calorie-burning benefits in a shorter period of time than conventional walking. This year, in order to strengthen our efforts for awareness, a health talk was organized for the participants.”

Backward walking may help relieve lower back pain, improve hamstring flexibility, burn more fat and calories in less time than traditional walking. It also improvesbody balance and even sharpensyour thinking skills and vision.
